Artist Statement
Growing up in Pittsburgh, I was fortunate to realize in the third grade that I wanted to be an artist. My enthusiasm for expression has not changed much since then and I have referred to myself as a ”see-it-all," with a need to continue to explore and experience art at all levels. I was an illustrator and graphic designer for over 40 years, and most of those while living in rural southwestern Wisconsin. I retired a few years ago and am now focusing on more personal work, that includes a series of limited edition giclée prints of what I feel have been some of the best of my illustration work, and that have a life beyond the context they were commissioned for.
Most of my pieces are collage, and I have grown with that process technically from xacto cut and pasted pieces, to multiple-layer Photoshop creations. Another style was a mechanical drawing approach to some illustrations, that have a drafted line art look, and when the Mac came along, I jumped at the chance to draw isometric pieces featuring the old mosaic "bitmap" 72 dpi look. I even promoted myself briefly as "Mr. Pixelmix," to distinguish this style from my collage work.
Most of my work accompanied editorial articles that appeared in national publications, such as: Time, Newsweek, Es- quire, Playboy, Games, Wall Street Journal, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Sesame Street and more; including many corporate publications and annual reports. Some pieces have been created for advertising, record album covers, posters, and book covers; and I've even made pieces for Cracker Jack, a pinball machine, and a Swatch watch.
